Subject Gaps , a - Bar Traces , and Parallel Parsing * Carson

چکیده
This paper discusses two issues related to the parsing of filler-gap dependencies, also known as movement relations. In the first half I suggest how to strengthen or refute the empirical basis for the claim that gaps (left by whmovement) in subject position are processed differently from those posited in post-verbal positions. In the second half I show how, if this claim is true, it can be modeled in a parallel parsing framework, improving upon a proposal in the literature.

Principled Multilingual Grammars for Large Corpora
We describe a multilingual implementation of such a grammar, and its advantages over both principlebased parsing and ad-hoc grammar design. We show how X-bar theory and language-independent semantic constraints facilitate grammar development. Our implementation includes innovative handling of (1) syntactic gaps, (2) logical structure alternations, and (3) conjunctions. Each of these innovations...
متن کاملThe Real-time Status of Island Phenomena
In parasitic-gap constructions an illicit gap inside a syntactic island becomes acceptable in combination with an additional licit gap, a result that has interesting implications for theories of grammar. Such constructions hold even greater interest for the question of the relation between grammatical knowledge and real-time language processing. This article presents results from two experiment...
متن کاملOptimizing design of 3D seismic acquisition by CRS trace interpolation
Land seismic data acquisition in most of cases suffers from obstacles in fields which deviates geometry of the real acquired data from what was designed. These obstacles will cause gaps, narrow azimuth and offset limitation in the data. These shortcomings, not only prevents regular trace distribution in bins, but also distorts the subsurface image by reducing illumination of the target formatio...
متن کاملAn improved joint model: POS tagging and dependency parsing
Dependency parsing is a way of syntactic parsing and a natural language that automatically analyzes the dependency structure of sentences, and the input for each sentence creates a dependency graph. Part-Of-Speech (POS) tagging is a prerequisite for dependency parsing. Generally, dependency parsers do the POS tagging task along with dependency parsing in a pipeline mode. Unfortunately, in pipel...
متن کاملبررسی مقایسهای تأثیر برچسبزنی مقولات دستوری بر تجزیه در پردازش خودکار زبان فارسی
In this paper, the role of Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging for parsing in automatic processing of the Persian language is studied. To this end, the impact of the quality of POS tagging as well as the impact of the quantity of information available in the POS tags on parsing are studied. To reach the goals, three parsing scenarios are proposed and compared. In the first scenario, the parser assigns...
